For treating mesothelioma, doctors usually use surgery, radiation therapy, palliative therapy and chemotherapy.

Surgery for mesothelioma treatment is available in two types; aggressive surgery and palliative procedures. Aggressive surgery is done through a procedure named extrapleural pneumonectomy, by which the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium are removed. The motive from aggressive surgery is to remove as much mesothelioma tumor as possible. Palliative procedures will be done when the mesothelioma disease is at the matured stage. The motive of this procedure is to give relief to the patient from the symptoms.

Chemotherapy can be used for many different reasons but they all change according to the end goal, stage of cancer and how early it is detected. For mesothelioma patients, chemotherapy is mostly used in conjunction with surgeries or when the patient isn’t fit for surgery to replace them.

Chemotherapy is administered through the vein and usually, a catheter will be inserted into the arm of the patient, so they don’t have to get repeated needle pokes which might be painful and uncomfortable.

Side effects of chemotherapy might happen because the drugs may hurt the normal cells in addition to the cancerous ones. These might be causing digestive problems, hair loss, and many other types of side effects that doctor will advise you of.

Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses radiations to kill mesothelioma tumor. This procedure is complex to undergo as the tumors are surrounded by sensitive parts of our body. There are possibilities that the heart and lungs being damaged by the radiation. Lower-dose radiation is one solution to slightly overcome from this critical issue.
